What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Lymphatic massage, also called lymphatic drainage, is a gentle technique that aims to encourage the flow of lymph through the lymphatic vessels and nodes. Lymph is a fluid that carries white blood cells, and the lymphatic system is part of the body’s immune and fluid balance.

Unlike a typical massage, it does not work on deep muscle. It uses light pressure and slow, rhythmic strokes on the superficial vessels and nodes.

What it aims to do

  • Support the movement of lymph and excess fluid through the body.
  • Help reduce swelling and fluid retention, for example after surgery or injury, with guidance from your healthcare provider.
  • Support the body’s natural circulation.
  • Promote relaxation and ease stress.

Possible benefits

  • Less swelling and puffiness in some people.
  • Support for recovery after surgery, once your doctor has cleared you.
  • Better circulation, which helps oxygen and nutrients reach tissues.
  • Relaxation, which may ease discomfort linked to ongoing pain or fatigue.
  • A feeling of lightness and more energy, which many people report.

Lymphatic massage is not a weight loss treatment. It may reduce bloating and water retention, but it does not remove body fat.

When to check first

Lymphatic massage may not be appropriate in some situations. Please speak with your doctor first if you have:

  • An active infection or fever.
  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis).
  • Certain cancers, where there may be a risk of spreading cancer cells.
  • Severe heart or kidney conditions.
  • Acute inflammation.

Common questions

Is it painful?

No. It is gentle and soothing, using light pressure and slow strokes.

How often should I book?

For general wellness, monthly may be enough. After surgery or for swelling, more frequent sessions may be suggested. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice.

How long is a session?

Sessions usually run from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area treated. See the service page for the lengths we offer.

What does it feel like?

Most people feel relaxed, and some notice a light tingling. A few feel tired for a few hours afterwards.

Can I do lymphatic massage on myself?

Gentle self-massage on the face, neck or arms is possible, but ask your therapist to show you the right pressure and direction first.

What should I do afterwards?

Drink water, avoid vigorous exercise or a heavy meal for a few hours, and rest if you feel tired.
