Support for growing bodies and busy minds, with clear consent and privacy.

Calm treatment room at a Calgary massage therapy clinic

Why massage for ages 12 to 20?

Adolescence brings fast growth, shifting hormones and rising pressure from school, sport and screens. Massage can offer a calm, drug-free way to look after the body and ease stress during this stage.

  • Physical relief: growth spurts, sport, heavy backpacks and long hours at a screen can leave muscles tight. Massage may ease tightness and support posture.
  • Mental and emotional support: massage encourages the body’s relaxation response, which may help teens feel calmer and sleep better.
  • Healthy habits: it helps young people learn to listen to their bodies and look after their wellbeing.

Possible benefits

  • Less tension from sport, screen use and posture.
  • Easing of muscle soreness from growing pains or exercise.
  • Better sleep and energy for some teens.
  • Calmer nervous system and, for some, less anxiety.
  • Better focus during busy study periods.
  • Support with managing stress and building self-care habits.

Massage is not a replacement for mental health care. It can sit alongside counselling or therapy.

Who it suits

  • Teen athletes recovering from training or minor injury.
  • High school and college students under exam stress.
  • Young people with sleep difficulty or stress.
  • Teens with posture issues from screen time.
  • Anyone who wants relaxation and balance in a busy life.

How sessions work

  • Consultation: we talk with the parent and teen, or just the young person if they are 18 or older, to understand goals and comfort levels.
  • Consent: for minors, a parent or guardian must give permission.
  • Custom sessions: work may focus on the neck, back, shoulders and legs, or be full body.
  • Privacy and respect: proper draping is always used. Teens can wear shorts and a tank top if they prefer.
  • Duration: 12 to 14 year olds usually have 30 minutes, 15 to 17 year olds 30 to 45 minutes, and 18 to 20 year olds 45 to 60 minutes.

See our minors and seniors massage policy for the full requirements.

Common questions

Can my teen come in alone?

Clients under 18 need parent or guardian consent. Depending on age and comfort, a parent may stay in the room or nearby. Clients 18 and older can attend on their own.

Will it help with sports recovery?

Many teen athletes find massage helps with soreness and flexibility after games or training.

Can it help with stress, anxiety or low mood?

It may help calm the nervous system and support sleep. It is a supplement to, not a replacement for, mental health care.

What should a teen wear?

Whatever is comfortable: shorts and a tank top, or undergarments with a sheet for draping. The therapist respects boundaries and adjusts to preference.

How often should a teen book?

Once a month suits general wellness. Athletes or teens with specific concerns may book more often. Your therapist will suggest a schedule.

Are there any risks?

Massage is very low risk with a trained therapist. We review health history before starting. Please check with your doctor if your teen has a medical condition.
